Renovation: The Entry & Stairs

After posting that photo yesterday of Sophie on the stairs, it reminded me of how they have changed over the last year and a half.

This was the view when you came in the front door when we looked at the house the first time.

A close-up of the stairs.  Notice the yellow paint and the weird tiled portion behind the railing.

That portion was there to give this door frame something to attach itself to.  Through the door to the left is our cloakroom and powder room.

We ripped out the doorframe, and also knocked the plaster off the back of the stairs.  There were a few rotted boards under there that we had to replace.

Starting to look better!

After all the major work was done.

And, today!  About five minutes ago, actually.  View from the front door, just like the first photo.  I love my map!  Every time I look at it, it makes me so happy.  And the gold mirror leaning in the nook is the perfect place to check your outfit in the morning.

And, a close-up of the stairs.  I finally got around to painting them white during Christmas break.  So much better than the weird cream color!

et voila!  Maybe someday we'll change the tile on the stairs, because about 2/3 of the way up it is older more worn-in tomettes (ie:  better looking) and the ones you can see here are newer.  About 1/2 way up a bunch of the tiles got broken on one step but we still haven't fixed those yet, either.  I'm sure we'll get around to everything eventually!

What a transformation! I love seeing before and after. The map looks great where you put it. Gorgeous front hall....so full of french character!

You have really made some changes! Out with the old, in with the new as they say. It's quite beautiful.

Well, I am new here and have loved reading about your adventures, how you came to live in France, and the stories of your renovation. The tabs for bilingual children and living abroad are spot on.

I will be visiting here often - what a delight!
